The Kala Journeyman U-Bass is a high-quality, beautiful instrument that sounds amazing both acoustically and amplified. Though it does take some getting used to, it is easy to play and perfect for travel. The included clip-on tuner is redundant as it has an integrated one. The instrument looks great in person, but some reviewers noted that the wood looks cheaper than expected for the price. The rubber strings take some getting used to and cause the instrument to go out of tune quickly, but the built-in tuner makes it simple to tune back up. Users with larger hands should take care to place their fingers between the frets correctly to avoid string buzz. Depending on the strings used, the user may have to adjust the on-board EQ. The instrument includes metal strings instead of the listed nylon strings. The U-bass is not fretless.
