Optoelectronics Editorial Review
Optical System Design, Second Edition has received mixed reviews from customers. While some appreciate the clear and understandable explanations, others find the content useless and out of date. The book does not cover important topics such as efficiently coupling in or out of a fiber or tricks with using laser diodes and other light sources, which are relevant for optical systems designed after the year 2000. Additionally, there is no discussion of many optical components commonly found on a bench and their usage. The structure of the book is also criticized, with early chapters mixing high-level material with basic concepts, making it harder to follow. However, later chapters are better structured. Some reviewers find the writing quality throughout the book to be abysmal. Despite these drawbacks, the book is praised for its use of figures, which aid in understanding. The English used in the book is also commended for being clear and understandable for non-native English speakers. Overall, while the book may not be suitable for beginners, it is seen as a valuable reference guide for those with some experience in the field of optics.
